04/16/2026 – East Main Street/South Decatur Street/Shenk Avenue Stormwater Project Update #13
Road work is finishing up for this week. Most of the stormwater infrastructure pipework is complete. Work will continue Monday. One crew will finish the installation of an additional manhole and other stormwater structures, while the second crew will begin curb and sidewalk restorations. Trench restoration is expected to begin sometime between the last week in April or first week in May. Once trench restoration is complete the stormwater work will move to South Decatur Street. Final paving of East Main Street will not take place until South Decatur Street is also ready for final paving.

04/10/2026 – East Main Street/South Decatur Street/Shenk Avenue Stormwater Project Update #12
Work has concluded for the week and will start again on Monday. Much of the work near the Lutheran Church is complete and should be finished up on Monday. The rest of the road work will be primarily at the east end of East Main Street and include installing the remainder of the trunk line and the street crossings at the inlets. Once that portion of work is complete curb repairs will be done and then trench restoration (temporary paving where the street was dug up).

Project work restarted this morning and is scheduled to continue through Thursday this week.
Tomorrow, April 7th, there will be no parking on the south side of East Main Street from 120-136 East Main Street. They will be milling the street to continue trench work. Work should wrap up in the area of the Lutheran Church by the end of the week and then will be continuing east on East Main Street.

Today’s construction work is almost complete and street closures on East Main Street from Center Square to Shenk Avenue and the street crossing at Speckled Hen will be removed by the end of the day.
Tomorrow the two crews will continue infrastructure work, one near the Lutheran Church and the other near Speckled Hen. We will ensure that all residents and those accessing businesses can reach their destinations, but at times there may be delays. We will do our best to get everyone to their destination in a timely manner (including buses).

East Main Street will be closed from Center Square to Shenk Avenue today. PPL has to hold a utility pole during the construction today and we will not be able to let traffic through. The east end of East Main Street at Speckled Hen will also be closed today due to a street crossing construction.
If you reside on East Main Street between Shenk Avenue and Speckled Hen, you will need to use Shenk Avenue to access your home.

Tonight will be the last evening of night work for the project (3 p.m.-1 a.m.). The project continues to progress, and two crews will continue working on the project during the daytime hours. As a reminder, we will ensure that all residents and those accessing businesses can reach their destinations, but at times this may require patience or entering through the opposite end of the street. This is a very large project, with lots of moving pieces, but we will do our best to get everyone to their destination.

Work continues on the East Main Street portion of the stormwater infrastructure project. For the remainder of the week one construction crew will be working during the day, and the other at night. Night work this week will be on Wednesday & Thursday from 3 p.m.-3 a.m. and Friday 3 p.m.-9 p.m. and may continue into next week. The night work will be at the east end of East Main Street to install infrastructure from the stormwater basin up through the Speckled Hen parking lot to East Main Street. The street remains open to local traffic and to all businesses. It is closed to through traffic and there may be street parking restrictions.Please exercise caution and patience when traveling in the detour area for your safety and for the safety of those working!

02/24/2026 – East Main Street/South Decatur Street/Shenk Avenue Stormwater Project Update #4
The East Main Street detour was put back in place this morning and will be up through Thursday. The detour may be in place on occasional Fridays or for night work. The street remains open to local traffic and to all businesses. It is closed to through traffic and there may be street parking restrictions.
There are now two crews working onsite, one at the east end of East Main Street and the other at the west end of the street. There will be 7 locations of street crossing work that will be completed during this project and will cause temporary closure of a specific area. During that work you will still be able to access all homes and businesses, but you will need to enter from the correct end of the street. We will send/post an update as street crossings are scheduled.
Please exercise caution and patience when traveling in the detour area for your safety and for the safety of those working!

The East Main Street detour will be back in place tomorrow, Thursday, February 19th. The street will be open to local traffic and to all businesses. Moving forward the detour will be in place every week from Monday through Thursday.

02/03/2026 – **East Main Street Road Closure Information**
East Main Street is open for local access. We are working with the contractor to update signage.
The closure is for daily thru traffic. Limiting unnecessary traffic flow will help project work progress more smoothly and quickly.
01/29/2026 – East Main Street/South Decatur Street/Shenk Avenue Stormwater Project Update #2
The project was temporarily delayed due to the recent weather. However, next week the contractor will be preparing for the East Main Street detour to be put in place. This is a “local traffic only” detour. Access to homes and businesses will be available at all times, but through traffic should be delayed during the daytime.

01/21/2026 – East Main Street/South Decatur Street/Shenk Avenue Stormwater Project Update #1
This morning construction commenced on the East Main Street/South Decatur Street/Shenk Avenue Stormwater Project with the removal of a tree and road cutting.
DH Funk & Sons LLC is the contractor for this job. Weather permitting, they would like to have Shenk Avenue work completed by the beginning of February and then begin on the East Main Street portion of work. When East Main Street work begins there will be a local traffic only detour. All residents will have access to their homes during the detour, but this will limit additional traffic on the roadway. The portion of East Main Street from the Square to Shenk Avenue will be completed first, then the portion from Shenk Avenue to the 100 block, and finally the eastern end in the area of Speckled Hen. Work on South Decatur Street will follow. Substantial project completion is targeted for mid-summer, this includes paving.

Tackling Stormwater (Article from 2024 Spring/Summer Newsletter)
Strasburg Borough Authority (SBA), charged by Council with the operations and management of the water and sewer system, has added Stormwater to their résumé. The Articles of Incorporation for SBA were amended by Council in 2023 to assign it the task of planning, managing, and implementing stormwater.
Strasburg Borough has a wealth of history, being founded almost 300 years ago, but with that history also comes aging and inadequate stormwater infrastructure. With increased storms, flooding, and flash flooding in our area, stormwater issues have become even more prevalent. With its new charge, SBA plans to tackle major and minor stormwater issues throughout the Borough.
A master plan for the major stormwater infrastructure has been drafted and will be completed in four phases. Each phase will focus on a different area of town: Phase One the East, Phase Two the North, Phase Three the West, and Phase Four the South. Phase One plans have been engineered, and details are being finalized with work most likely starting in 2025. Minor stormwater projects and maintenance will be completed by the Strasburg Borough Public Works Department.
The Borough has already received grant funds for a portion of the stormwater improvements and will actively seek out future grants and funding opportunities. SBA asks for time, patience, and understanding during its journey to tackle these stormwater projects and issues.
